A summary of some of John’s Hattie’s research was conducted by Will Fastiggi. Fastiggi identified the 6 qualities of teachers which impact student learning the most. These qualities, in order of importance, sees the most ‘successful’ teachers as those who:
Are passionate about helping their students learn;
Monitor their impact on students’ learning, and adjust their approaches accordingly;
Are clear about what they want their students to learn;
Forge strong relationships with their students;
Adopt evidence-based teaching strategies;
Actively seek to improve their own teaching.
It is important to note that the Hattie Effect table is constantly being updated as technology changes. The top 6 qualities of teachers (and linked pedagogical methodologies) in November 2016 would be therefore be quite different than those listed in November 2020, for example.
As can be seen from the Hattie Effect size table above, the Hattie Effect essentially takes the guesswork out of establishing effective teaching methods by stating there are practices that we know are effective in the learning and teaching process and there are certain practices that we know are not. We do know what works. In essence, the Hattie Effect is a scientific methodology applied to education, providing teachers with professionally researched learning and teaching approaches. The Hattie instruction refers to making student learning visible to teachers so they will know whether they are having an impact on this learning. In addition, it also refers to making teaching visible to the learner as well, so that learners learn to become their own teachers, an important component of becoming lifelong learners — learning to learn.

In an educational setting, effect size is one way to measure the effectiveness of a particular methodology; in general terms, it provides the teacher with a measure on the impact their learning and teaching is having on learners.
Q: What is mean by visible learning?
A: Visible learning refers to an enhanced role for teachers as they become evaluators of their own teaching. According to John Hattie, visible learning and teaching occurs when teachers see learning through the eyes of their learners and help them become their own teachers.
